NeoGen Plasma Aftercare Guide

How to look after your skin following NeoGen Plasma treatment

Your NeoGen treatment does not end when you leave the clinic.

The days immediately following treatment are an important part of the regenerative process. How you care for your skin during this period can influence comfort, healing and the risk of unwanted irritation or pigmentation.

At Sculpture Clinic in Gravesend, Kent, every NeoGen patient receives treatment-specific aftercare based on the energy used, the area treated and how their skin is expected to respond.

This guide explains what you can expect after NeoGen Plasma treatment, what you should and should not do during recovery, and when you should contact us.

What happens to the skin after NeoGen Plasma?

NeoGen works differently from conventional ablative resurfacing.

Medical-grade nitrogen is converted into plasma energy and delivered to the skin in controlled pulses. This creates a controlled thermal effect within the epidermis and dermis, stimulating regeneration and subsequent collagen remodelling.

Importantly, the treated epidermal layers initially remain in place.

Rather than being immediately removed, this tissue acts as a natural biological dressing, helping to protect the new epidermis forming underneath.

Over the following days, the treated superficial skin gradually sheds.

The depth of this response depends largely upon the energy delivered during your treatment.

This means that redness, dryness, bronzing, flaking and peeling can all be expected parts of NeoGen recovery.

Do not try to accelerate this process.

Your NeoGen recovery will depend on your treatment energy

NeoGen can be delivered at different energy levels.

A lower-energy regenerative treatment may result in relatively little interruption to normal life, whereas stronger treatments intentionally create a more significant resurfacing response.

As a general guide:

Lower-energy NeoGen

Typical recovery: approximately 2–3 days

You may experience:

  • Redness
  • Warmth
  • Mild tightness
  • Dryness
  • Fine flaking
  • Minimal peeling

Medium-energy NeoGen

Typical recovery: approximately 2–5 days, although some patients may take longer

You may experience:

  • More noticeable redness
  • Dryness and tightness
  • Bronzing or darkening of the treated skin
  • Flaking
  • Peeling
  • Mild swelling, particularly around the eyes

Higher-energy NeoGen

Typical recovery: approximately 7–10 days or longer depending upon treatment intensity and individual healing

You should expect a more visible regenerative response, including:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bronzing
  • Significant dryness
  • Peeling or shedding
  • Temporary changes in skin texture

These timelines are guides rather than guarantees.

Your individual aftercare instructions always take priority.

The first 24 hours after NeoGen

Immediately after treatment, your skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive.

Some redness is expected and mild swelling may develop, particularly when the upper or lower eye area has been treated.

During this early phase, less is more.

Do:

  • Keep your hands away from the treated skin as much as possible.
  • Keep the skin dry unless we have specifically advised otherwise.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated if you are experiencing swelling.
  • Follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by Sculpture Clinic.
  • Use only products that we have recommended.

Do not:

  • Cleanse the skin during the first 24 hours unless instructed otherwise.
  • Scrub, rub or exfoliate the area.
  • Apply your normal skincare.
  • Apply retinol, retinoids, acids or exfoliating products.
  • Pick at dry or peeling skin.
  • Use facial brushes or cleansing devices.
  • Have another facial or skin treatment.

If your skin feels irritated, you may gently pat the area with cool water if you have been advised that this is appropriate.

Days 1–3: redness, dryness and the beginning of peeling

During the next few days the skin may begin to feel progressively drier and tighter.

You may also notice a bronzed, darker or slightly rough appearance.

This is usually part of the expected NeoGen response.

Depending upon the treatment energy, fine flaking or more obvious peeling may then begin.

The most important rule: do not pick the skin

It can be tempting to remove an area that has started peeling.

Do not.

The superficial treated tissue is protecting the newly regenerating epidermis underneath. Prematurely pulling it away may unnecessarily traumatise the fresh skin.

Avoid:

  • Picking
  • Peeling
  • Scratching
  • Scrubbing
  • Facial exfoliation
  • Flannels or cleansing brushes
  • Facial scrubs
  • Chemical exfoliants

Allow the skin to detach naturally.

When can I start cleansing after NeoGen?

For many lower- and medium-energy treatments, gentle cleansing may recommence after approximately 24 hours, unless we have instructed you differently.

Use:

  • Cool or lukewarm water
  • A mild water-based cleanser recommended by the clinic
  • Clean hands rather than a cleansing device

Pat the skin dry very gently.

Do not rub it with a towel.

Following stronger NeoGen treatments, your individual instructions may differ.

When should I moisturise?

This is one area where NeoGen aftercare can differ from conventional facial treatments.

It may seem logical to immediately cover dry skin with a heavy moisturiser, but following some NeoGen protocols we may intentionally allow the superficial treated tissue to dry and shed naturally.

Applying moisturising or occlusive products too early may interfere with the intended peeling process.

For lower- and medium-energy treatments, you may therefore be advised to wait until peeling is substantially or almost complete before introducing a mild moisturiser or rehydrating product.

Higher-energy protocols can be different and may require an occlusive or barrier product during the early recovery period.

Your Sculpture Clinic aftercare instructions will tell you which protocol applies to you.

Do not substitute your usual skincare products without discussing them with us first.

The peeling stage

The appearance of peeling varies significantly between patients.

Some people experience very fine flaking that is barely visible.

Others may develop obvious sheets or patches of superficial skin shedding.

You may also notice that different areas recover at different speeds.

Around the mouth, eyes and areas of greater movement can behave differently from the cheeks or forehead.

During this period:

  • Allow the skin to peel naturally.
  • Do not pull away attached skin.
  • Avoid exfoliation.
  • Avoid active skincare.
  • Avoid cosmetic facial treatments.
  • Keep your skincare routine extremely simple.
  • Protect the skin carefully from sunlight.

The new skin underneath may initially appear pink, smooth and more sensitive.

Treat it gently.

Sun protection after NeoGen is essential

UV exposure following regenerative treatment increases the risk of unwanted pigmentation.

This is particularly important in patients who are already susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Avoid deliberate sun exposure while the skin is recovering.

Once your skin has reached the stage where sunscreen can be comfortably and safely applied, use a high-protection broad-spectrum SPF 50 as directed by your practitioner.

Continue careful sun protection after visible recovery has finished.

Sun protection is not simply an aftercare measure. It is one of the most important ways of preserving the improvements you are trying to achieve from NeoGen.

What skincare ingredients should I avoid?

Do not restart powerful active skincare while your skin is still peeling, inflamed or sensitive.

Products that normally work perfectly well on intact skin may irritate newly regenerating skin.

Temporarily avoid ingredients including:

  • Retinol
  • Prescription retinoids
  • Tretinoin
  • Glycolic acid
  • Salicylic acid
  • Lactic acid
  • AHAs
  • BHAs
  • Strong exfoliating acids
  • Scrubs
  • Exfoliating toners
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Strong vitamin C formulations
  • Highly fragranced products

We will advise when these can safely be reintroduced.

Do not judge this purely by the number of days that have passed.

The condition of your skin is more important than the calendar.

When can I wear make-up after NeoGen?

This depends upon the treatment intensity and how quickly your skin recovers.

Do not apply make-up while the skin is actively peeling, irritated or inadequately healed.

Following lower-energy treatments, make-up may sometimes be resumed relatively quickly.

Medium- and higher-energy treatments may require several days or longer before cosmetics are appropriate.

When you restart make-up:

  • Ensure the skin has adequately recovered.
  • Use clean brushes and applicators.
  • Avoid heavily fragranced or irritating products.
  • Do not aggressively rub products into the skin.
  • Remove make-up gently.

If you are unsure, send the clinic a photograph before restarting.

Exercise after NeoGen

Avoid strenuous exercise during the early recovery period, particularly if your skin remains hot, red or inflamed.

Exercise increases body temperature and sweating, both of which can irritate recently treated skin.

Also temporarily avoid:

  • Saunas
  • Steam rooms
  • Hot yoga
  • Very hot baths
  • Very hot showers directly onto the face
  • Swimming pools
  • Jacuzzis and hot tubs

You can gradually return to normal activity as your skin settles.

Can I wash my hair?

Yes, but take care during the early recovery period.

Avoid very hot water running directly over the treated face or neck and prevent shampoo, conditioner, hair dye and heavily fragranced hair products from coming into contact with healing skin.

If you have undergone more intensive treatment, it may be easier to wash your hair immediately before your appointment and avoid doing so again during the earliest stage of recovery.

Can I have other facial treatments after NeoGen?

Not immediately.

Your skin needs time to complete its regenerative response.

Avoid treatments such as:

  • Chemical peels
  • Microneedling
  • RF microneedling
  • Laser treatments
  • IPL
  • Facial waxing
  • Dermaplaning
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Aggressive facials
  • Other resurfacing procedures

Do not book another aesthetic skin procedure simply because the visible peeling has stopped.

Discuss timing with us first.

What about injectable treatments?

If you are planning treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, polynucleotides or skin boosters around your NeoGen programme, tell us.

Treatment sequencing matters.

We will help you create an appropriate timetable rather than unnecessarily stacking procedures together while the skin is recovering.

Days 5–10: what should I expect?

For many patients undergoing medium-energy treatment, this is when visible recovery is approaching completion.

The majority of peeling should gradually settle and the newly regenerated surface becomes more apparent.

Following higher-energy treatment, however, significant peeling may still be occurring.

You may notice:

  • Smoother-feeling skin
  • Pinkness
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Temporary dryness
  • A more refined surface texture

Do not assume that the skin is completely recovered simply because the peeling has stopped.

The epidermal barrier is still maturing.

Continue with gentle skincare and sun protection.

Weeks 2–4: the visible recovery may be finished, but NeoGen is still working

Once your skin looks normal again, it is easy to assume that the NeoGen process has finished.

It hasn’t.

The visible peeling represents only the superficial part of the response.

Beneath the surface, dermal remodelling continues.

NeoGen creates a Zone of Thermal Modification within the dermis, initiating changes that lead to new collagen formation and remodelling over the weeks and months that follow treatment.

This is why NeoGen results should not be judged immediately after the peeling finishes.

Your skin continues changing well beyond the initial recovery period.

When should I restart my normal skincare?

Once your skin has fully recovered, we will help you progressively return to your usual skincare programme.

This may include:

  • Antioxidants
  • Retinoids
  • Pigment-control products
  • Barrier-supporting skincare
  • Hydrating products
  • Daily SPF

Do not restart everything simultaneously.

A gradual reintroduction makes it easier to identify irritation and avoids unnecessarily overloading newly recovered skin.

Hydration after NeoGen

Good hydration supports normal skin physiology during recovery.

Drink water regularly during the days following treatment.

Your skin may initially feel unusually dry or tight, but resist trying to compensate by applying unapproved products.

There is an important distinction between keeping yourself hydrated and applying topical moisturisers too early during a protocol where we are waiting for treated superficial skin to shed.

Follow the guidance you have been given.

NeoGen around the eyes: additional aftercare

Mild swelling can be more noticeable after NeoGen treatment around the eyes.

This can occasionally look more pronounced the morning after treatment because fluid accumulates while lying flat.

You can help by:

  • Sleeping slightly elevated for the first night or two.
  • Avoiding excessive heat.
  • Avoiding vigorous exercise.
  • Not rubbing the eyes.
  • Following your prescribed recovery skincare.

Swelling should progressively improve.

If swelling becomes severe, painful or continues to worsen rather than improve, contact us.

What is normal after NeoGen?

Expected responses can include:

  • Redness
  • Warmth
  • Mild tenderness
  • Tightness
  • Dry skin
  • Bronzing or temporary darkening
  • Flaking
  • Peeling
  • Temporary pinkness
  • Mild swelling
  • Increased skin sensitivity
  • Mild itching as the skin sheds

The intensity varies according to the treatment energy and individual healing response.

When should I contact Sculpture Clinic?

We would always rather you contact us if you are unsure.

Get in touch promptly if you experience something that seems significantly different from the recovery we described to you.

Contact the clinic if you develop:

  • Pain that is unexpectedly severe or increasing
  • Rapidly worsening swelling
  • Increasing redness rather than gradual improvement
  • Significant heat within the skin
  • Pus or unusual discharge
  • Blistering that you were not expecting
  • Increasing tenderness
  • Fever or feeling systemically unwell
  • Significant unexpected change in skin colour
  • A rash or suspected allergic reaction
  • Any concern about infection
  • Any reaction that worries you

Do not try to treat a complication yourself using leftover antibiotics, topical steroids or other prescription medicines unless you have been instructed to do so by an appropriate healthcare professional.

What should I do if I am worried about how my skin looks?

Take clear photographs in natural light and contact Sculpture Clinic.

Include:

  • The date of your NeoGen treatment
  • When the change first appeared
  • Whether it is improving or worsening
  • Any discomfort, itching or pain
  • Any products you have applied
  • Any medication you have taken

Photographs often allow us to determine whether what you are seeing is part of the expected recovery process or whether we need to review you.

How long do NeoGen results take to develop?

NeoGen is a regenerative treatment rather than an instant cosmetic procedure.

Early improvements in texture and skin quality may become apparent once the visible recovery stage has finished.

However, collagen remodelling continues over the following months.

For this reason, we encourage patients to think about their NeoGen results in terms of months rather than days.

The photographs taken immediately after your treatment course are therefore not necessarily the photographs that demonstrate your final result.

How do I get the best result from my NeoGen treatment?

The fundamentals are surprisingly simple:

Follow your individual aftercare instructions

The energy used during your treatment determines how your skin should be managed afterwards.

Do not pick peeling skin

Allow the biological resurfacing process to occur naturally.

Protect yourself from UV exposure

Sun protection is particularly important while newly regenerated skin is vulnerable to pigmentation.

Avoid unnecessary irritation

Give the skin time to recover before restarting acids, retinoids, exfoliation or aesthetic procedures.

Look after your skin between treatments

A healthy skin barrier provides a better foundation for future treatment.

Give NeoGen time

Collagen does not remodel overnight.

Your skin continues responding long after the visible peeling has stopped.

The Sculpture Clinic approach to NeoGen aftercare

We believe aftercare should be considered part of the treatment rather than an instruction sheet handed over as you leave.

Our NeoGen pathway incorporates:

Preparation → Treatment → Recovery → Regeneration → Review

Every patient receives guidance appropriate to the energy used during their treatment.

Where appropriate, we will also provide a Sculpture Clinic Recovery Kit containing the products required during your recovery period.

You should therefore not need to guess which cleanser, moisturiser or recovery product to use.

Frequently asked questions about NeoGen recovery

How long is the downtime after NeoGen?

It depends upon treatment intensity.

As a broad guide:

Low energy: approximately 2–3 days
Medium energy: approximately 2–5 days
Higher energy: approximately 7–10 days or potentially longer

Individual recovery varies.

Will my skin peel?

Some degree of shedding is expected following many NeoGen treatments.

Low-energy treatments may create only fine flaking, while stronger treatment can produce more obvious peeling.

Should I moisturise peeling NeoGen skin?

Not automatically.

With some NeoGen protocols, moisturising too early can interfere with the intended drying and shedding of treated superficial skin. We will advise when you should begin rehydrating your skin.

Can I peel the loose skin off?

No.

Allow it to shed naturally.

Can I use Vaseline after NeoGen?

Only if it forms part of the specific aftercare protocol we have given you. Higher-energy protocols may involve barrier or occlusive products whereas lower-energy protocols can be managed differently.

When can I wash my face?

Usually after approximately 24 hours following lower- and medium-energy treatment, using a mild water-based cleanser, unless your practitioner has given different instructions.

When can I exercise?

Wait until the initial heat, redness and inflammation have settled. More intensive treatment may require a longer period away from strenuous exercise.

Can I drink alcohol after NeoGen?

It is sensible to minimise alcohol during the immediate recovery period because it can contribute to dehydration, flushing and inflammation.

When can I wear make-up?

Once your skin has recovered sufficiently and is no longer actively peeling or irritated. The timing depends upon treatment intensity.

Can I go in the sun?

Avoid deliberate sun exposure during recovery and use appropriate high-level sun protection once your practitioner advises that it can be applied.

When can I restart retinol?

Only once your skin has fully recovered and preferably when advised by us. Do not restart retinoids simply because peeling has stopped.

When will I see the final result?

Visible improvement develops progressively, with dermal collagen remodelling continuing for several months after treatment.

Your skin is still changing after the peeling stops

NeoGen is designed to initiate a regenerative response.

The redness and peeling are temporary.

The longer-term objective is what happens afterwards: epidermal renewal, dermal remodelling and progressive collagen formation.

Good aftercare protects that process.
