NeoGen Plasma Downtime
Day 1–14 – What to Expect After Treatment
One of the most common questions we are asked before NeoGen Plasma treatment is:
“What will my skin look like afterwards, and how much downtime should I expect?”
There is no single answer because NeoGen Plasma is a highly customisable treatment. Recovery varies according to the energy delivered, number of passes, treatment area, skin condition, individual sensitivity and your own healing response.
At Sculpture Clinic, we therefore do not simply categorise every patient as needing a “low”, “medium” or “high” treatment.
Your NeoGen treatment is personalised following consultation and skin assessment. We consider what we are trying to improve, your skin type and sensitivity, pigmentation risk, previous treatments and, importantly, how much visible or social downtime you can realistically accommodate.
Someone who needs to return to a customer-facing job within a few days may require a very different treatment plan from somebody who is comfortable with a longer period of visible recovery.
The following timeline is therefore a guide to what you may experience rather than a promise of exactly how many days your recovery will take.
PLAN YOUR NEOGEN RECOVERY – Explore your downtime and take our preparation quiz to understand how to support your skin before treatment.
Why Does NeoGen Plasma Cause Downtime?
NeoGen uses medical-grade nitrogen to generate plasma energy, which is delivered to the skin in carefully controlled pulses.
This produces controlled heating within the skin while initially preserving the treated epidermal layer. This layer can act as a temporary biological dressing while regeneration takes place underneath.
Over time, this controlled thermal response stimulates epidermal regeneration and dermal remodelling, including changes in collagen.
This explains why your skin may temporarily appear red, dry, rough, darker or flaky before fresher regenerated skin becomes visible.
The recovery period is part of the biological response to treatment – not the final result.

Lower-Energy NeoGen
Generally associated with less visible downtime
Lower-energy NeoGen may be selected when we want to stimulate skin regeneration while keeping visible recovery relatively manageable.
It may be suitable as part of a treatment course for concerns such as:
- early signs of ageing
- skin quality
- fine lines
- uneven texture
- pores
- mild pigmentation or photodamage
- general skin rejuvenation
Importantly, low energy does not mean no downtime.
Published research evaluating multiple low-energy plasma skin regeneration treatments reported complete re-epithelialisation within approximately four days, while visible redness lasted longer in some patients (Bogle et al., 2007).
Day 1 – Treatment Day
Immediately following treatment, your skin may feel:
- warm
- tight
- mildly sensitive
- slightly swollen
- pink or red
Some patients describe the sensation as being similar to sunburn.
At this stage, less is more. We want the skin to begin its natural recovery without introducing unnecessary active ingredients.
Days 2–3
Warmth and redness may begin to settle, although this varies between patients.
Your skin may begin to feel drier or slightly rough, and you may notice very fine flaking.
Some patients feel comfortable returning to normal social activities relatively quickly; others may retain visible redness for several days.
Days 4–7
The skin generally becomes progressively calmer.
Fine dryness, flaking or residual redness may continue while the epidermal barrier normalises.
Skin may gradually begin to feel smoother and look fresher.
Days 7–14
For many patients, the obvious recovery process has substantially settled.
However, NeoGen has not finished working simply because your skin looks normal again. The regenerative and remodelling processes stimulated within the skin continue beyond the visible recovery period.
Medium-Energy NeoGen
Generally associated with a more noticeable recovery period
Medium-energy treatment creates a greater thermal effect and consequently tends to produce more visible recovery.
It may be considered for concerns including:
- established fine lines
- textural changes
- photodamage
- pigmentation
- acne scarring
- reduced elasticity
- early-to-moderate skin laxity
The degree and duration of downtime still varies considerably between patients.
Day 1 – Treatment Day
Redness, warmth and tightness are likely to be more noticeable.
Some swelling may occur, particularly around delicate areas such as the eyes.
Days 2–3
This can be the stage when your skin temporarily looks more treated rather than less treated.
You may notice:
- increased dryness
- tightness
- a rougher texture
- bronzing or darkening
- sensitivity
- swelling
These changes can be part of the expected regenerative response.
Days 3–5
Dryness and shedding may become increasingly noticeable.
Fine peeling or flaking can occur as epidermal regeneration progresses.
Do not pick, peel, scrub or exfoliate the skin.
Trying to remove skin before it is ready can increase irritation and potentially increase the risk of complications, including post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Days 5–7
The treated surface progressively settles and fresher-looking skin becomes increasingly apparent.
Some patients may still have visible redness, dryness or sensitivity at this point.
Days 7–14
The skin should continue to become calmer, smoother and more comfortable.
Residual redness or sensitivity can persist beyond this timeframe in some patients, particularly following more intensive treatment or in sensitive areas.
Higher-Energy NeoGen
Generally associated with the greatest visible recovery
Higher-energy NeoGen creates a more intensive thermal response and is therefore reserved for appropriately selected patients and indications.
It may be considered where we are treating concerns such as:
- more advanced photodamage
- deeper lines
- significant textural change
- skin laxity
- scarring
- more established signs of ageing
Higher energy does not automatically mean a better treatment or a better result.
The objective is to deliver sufficient energy to produce the desired clinical response while respecting your skin characteristics, pigmentation risk, sensitivity and acceptable recovery period.
Day 1 – Treatment Day
Redness, warmth, tightness and swelling can be considerably more noticeable.
The skin may appear intensely flushed and feel hot.
Swelling can be particularly noticeable around the eyes.
Days 2–3
The skin may become progressively:
- drier
- darker or bronzed
- tighter
- rougher
- more sensitive
This stage can sometimes worry patients because the skin may temporarily look more dramatic than it did immediately after treatment.
Days 3–5
Dryness, tightness and roughness may become more pronounced.
Shedding or peeling may begin.
It is important not to try to accelerate this process.
Days 5–7
The treated epidermal surface may progressively shed as regenerated skin emerges underneath.
Different areas of the face can recover at different speeds.
Days 7–10
Significant shedding may be settling, although redness, dryness and sensitivity can remain.
Freshly regenerated skin may initially appear pinker than your normal complexion.
Days 10–14 and Beyond
The skin should continue to normalise.
Some patients may still experience residual redness, dryness or sensitivity beyond 14 days following a more intensive treatment.
This does not mean that the treatment has stopped working. The visible recovery and the deeper biological remodelling are two different processes.
Your NeoGen Recovery Programme at Sculpture Clinic
Aftercare is an important part of your treatment.
Following NeoGen, we deliberately simplify your skincare.
This is not the time for an elaborate routine containing multiple serums, acids or active ingredients.
Our initial priorities are simple:
Protect. Soothe. Hydrate. Support. Recover.
Your exact aftercare programme will depend upon the intensity of treatment and how your skin responds.
AlumierMD Recovery Mask
Where appropriate, an AlumierMD hydrating recovery mask can be incorporated into your recovery programme.
Its role is primarily to provide soothing hydration and improve comfort while supporting recovering skin.
We do not necessarily recommend applying multiple products immediately following NeoGen simply because they are hydrating.
Timing matters.
Your clinician will advise when to use your AlumierMD mask according to the treatment delivered and the condition of your skin.
Sensilis 10-Day Recovery Kit
For patients undergoing treatments where a more structured recovery programme is appropriate, we provide a Sensilis 10-Day Recovery Kit.
The principle remains deliberately simple: provide the recovering skin with what it needs without unnecessarily overwhelming the barrier.
Your clinician will explain exactly which products to use, how often to use them and when you can begin returning to your normal skincare routine.
Élevé – Supporting Skin From Within
Skin recovery is not purely about what we apply topically.
We may also recommend Élevé nutritional support as part of our wider approach to skin health.
Good nutrition provides the body with the nutrients required for normal physiological processes, including normal skin function and tissue repair.
Nutritional supplementation does not replace appropriate aftercare, hydration or photoprotection, but it can form part of a broader inside-and-out approach to skin health.
Why Minimal Skincare Matters
One of the most important pieces of advice following NeoGen is:
Do not over-treat recovering skin.
It can be tempting to apply multiple products because the skin feels dry or because you want to accelerate your result.
More skincare does not necessarily mean better recovery.
Unless specifically advised otherwise by your clinician, you may be asked temporarily to avoid:
- retinoids
- AHAs and BHAs
- exfoliating acids
- facial scrubs
- strong active vitamin C formulations
- potentially irritating serums
- fragranced products
- exfoliating brushes or cleansing devices
Most importantly:
Do not pick or peel shedding skin.
Your individual aftercare instructions always take priority because the appropriate time to reintroduce active skincare depends upon your treatment and recovery.
SPF Is Essential After NeoGen
Photoprotection is particularly important following a resurfacing treatment.
Recovering skin should be protected from unnecessary ultraviolet exposure, particularly where there is susceptibility to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Once your clinician advises that sunscreen can be applied, we recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every morning alongside sensible avoidance of excessive direct sunlight.
SPF is not simply for hot or sunny days.
UVA exposure occurs throughout the year, including through cloud, so ongoing photoprotection is an important part of protecting your skin and maintaining your results.
So, How Much Downtime Will I Actually Have?
We deliberately avoid promising that a particular energy level will give you exactly two, five or ten days of downtime.
There are simply too many variables.
Your recovery can be influenced by:
- energy delivered
- number of passes
- treatment area
- your skin condition
- skin sensitivity
- previous treatments
- individual healing response
- pigmentation tendency
- the clinical endpoint we are trying to achieve
There is also an important difference between clinical recovery and social downtime.
You may be medically comfortable and able to continue normal daily activities while still having redness, dryness, bronzing or flaking that you personally would prefer not to have visible at work or at a social event.
That distinction matters to us.
Your Lifestyle Helps Determine Your Treatment
During your consultation, we will ask what you are trying to achieve – but we will also ask what is happening in your life.
Do you need to be back at work?
Are you customer-facing?
Do you have a wedding coming up?
Are you travelling?
Would several days of redness or peeling bother you?
Or are you comfortable accepting more visible recovery if a more intensive treatment is clinically appropriate?
These questions help us determine your treatment strategy.
The aim is not to give you the highest energy you can tolerate. It is to give you the appropriate treatment for your skin, your objectives and your life.
When Should You Contact Sculpture Clinic?
Redness, warmth, tightness, dryness, swelling, bronzing and shedding can all occur following NeoGen, with the degree varying according to treatment intensity.
However, you should contact us if you experience symptoms that are unexpected or concerning, including:
- increasing rather than improving pain
- marked or rapidly worsening swelling
- blistering
- spreading redness
- discharge or weeping
- symptoms suggestive of infection
- any reaction that causes you concern
If you are uncertain whether something is part of normal recovery, please contact us.
When Will I See My Final NeoGen Result?
Do not judge your NeoGen result at Day 14.
The first days and weeks are primarily about recovery.
NeoGen initiates regenerative processes within the skin that continue beyond the visible healing period. Research examining nitrogen plasma skin regeneration has demonstrated subsequent dermal remodelling and changes in collagen following treatment (Bogle et al., 2007; Foster, Moy and Fincher, 2008).
Improvements can therefore continue developing during the weeks and months following treatment.
Where appropriate, we can use standardised photography and skin analysis to monitor these changes objectively rather than relying solely on what you see in the mirror from one day to the next.
Planning NeoGen Around Your Life
If you have a wedding, holiday, important meeting, photography session or major social event approaching, tell us at your consultation.
We can take this into account when planning both the timing and intensity of your treatment.
For some patients, keeping visible downtime to a minimum is the priority.
For others, a more intensive treatment and longer recovery period may be appropriate.
Neither approach is inherently better.
Your NeoGen treatment should be personalised to your skin, your concerns and the amount of downtime that works for you.
Book Your NeoGen Consultation
Every NeoGen treatment at Sculpture Clinic begins with a consultation.
We will assess your skin, discuss what you would like to improve, consider your sensitivity and pigmentation risk, establish how much social downtime you can realistically accommodate and develop a personalised treatment plan.
No NeoGen treatment is performed until we have established what is appropriate for your skin.
